I am writing a report, both as an assignment and also for my organisation,
regarding library services for SLDD users (particularly those with
visual/hearing impairment) My organisation is a medium sized Further
Education College.
We have very small numbers of students/members of the public who have been
identified as having a visual or hearing impairment and we have a limited
budget in terms of purchasing specialist equipment etc.
To date we have always tried to meet the needs of all our users and have
undergone an accessibility survey. But to date we have not consciously
considered services for those with sight/hearing difficulties. Although we
have small numbers of students and a small budget, there is the issue of
justifying expenditure for expensive equipment against equal
opportunity/access to consider.
I am aware that there are many things that we could quite easily do or put
into place now which would be helpful to those with visual/hearing
difficulties but I would be grateful for any information that is available
and whether your library has a policy/guidelines etc to address this issue.
