Netskills Workshop:
Using the Internet for Teaching and Learning
09:30 - 16:30 Thursday 10th February 2000 University of Newcastle
The Dearing report recognises the importance of electronic information
and delivery in education, particularly using networked resources such
as the World Wide Web. A wealth of resources and techniques now exist
which serve as a source both for exciting examples of new teaching
practices, as well as easily accessible methods for adoption into
everyday teaching and learning.
This is a practical workshop for users of the World Wide Web who would
like to understand more about how the Internet can be used for teaching
and learning. The workshop aims to introduce and explore some of the
tools and techniques used in Internet-based teaching and participants
will have the opportunity to create some simple web-based materials.
It is suitable for researchers and academics from any discipline,
librarians and computing service staff.
Workshop Content:
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and
hands-on sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion.
Participants will each receive a workbook which contains workshop
exercises, presentation slides and other relevant materials.
Topics covered will include:
* delivering lecture support material and self-paced tutorials via the
World Wide Web
* using interactive simulation on the World Wide Web
* integrating multimedia in web-based teaching
* tools for creating static and interactive web pages
* using "Integrated Learning Environment" tools for teaching and
learning
* creating and delivering web-based assessment
By the end of the workshop participants will have:
* seen examples of how the Internet is being used for various teaching
purposes
* explored online teaching and learning resources in a variety of
academic subjects
* gained experience in using different courseware tools
* had an opportunity to discuss some of the issues involved in
Internet-based teaching
* created static web pages using Word and PowerPoint’s Internet
Assistants
* explored various tools and techniques for online assessment and
created their own multiple choice quiz
Workshop Requirements:
Participants need no special technical skills; however basic computing
skills such as using a mouse and keyboard are essential. Basic use of a
web browser and Microsoft Windows (for opening and saving files and
opening and closing applications) would be helpful.
The cost of the workshop is £ 105 for participants from higher and
further education. Other participants should contact Netskills for the
relevant fees.
Note: Costs include lunch, morning coffee and afternoon tea.
