Dear All
A very big thank you to everyone who responded to my questions about video
lending, your replys were prompt and very informative. Below is an analysis
of the responses that I received, including some of your comments where
appropriate. It has given me a good basis on which to make recommendations
for substantial changes.

> Do you lend videos or just allow viewing within the library?
100% lend, 9 specifically mentioned that videos can be viewed on the
premises.
> If you lend for how long can they be borrowed?
Big variations from overnight only to 6 weeks with all sorts of combinations
in between. Particularly popular is a combination or 1 week loan and
overnight loan.
> Do you attach any extra notes concerning restriction of use/emphasising
that the video should not be copied etc?

· We rely on the copyright statements either on the video box or at the
beginning of the film itself
· We get students to sign a disclaimer saying they are borrowing/viewing for
educational purposes - next year we will include this on our registration
card but as it was not included this year, they have to sign separate piece
of paper. Did contact CLA who seemed to indicate it was OK so long as we
did this and did not hire out or allow non students to take.
· We have printed labels with our logo/ERA/This recording to be used for
educational purposes only (as suggested by the ERA in their publicity) We
also have posters up in the A-V areas drawing users' attention to copyright
restrictions and educational use only.
· We have a standard sticky label with words to the effect that it is only
to be used for education purposes. No copying etc
· All tapes did bear the legend "this recording is for educational uses
only". However, we don't say on the sticker that they shouldn't be copied.
Where we get enquiries at any Media Service point from students wanting to
make their own copy, staff will question them or direct them to me in order
to ascertain why the copy is required and if it's legal and appropriate to
supply one.
· are considering some sort of warning about it being their responsibility
if the tape damages machinery at home.
> Do you restrict borrowing to certain types of user and if so who?
About half and half. Restrictions are usually for external users or by age.
> Do you treat ERA produced videos differently and if so how?
Unanimous No.
> Do you charge for the loan of any of these?
Unanimous No.
This wouldn't be allowed, after all the whole point about copyright
is that you don't finanacially benefit from someone else's work without
their say so. Charging for loans would be doing just that.
