For some time, the Library of the University of Strathclyde has been
conducting an experiment, using the OCLC CORC Project, whereby certain
Internet resources in the fields of education and the Scottish
Parliament have been catalogued, and the resultant catalogue records
downloaded to our Ameritech Horizon Opac, which permits users to be
patched through to the resource directly from the Opac screen.
We propose to extend the experiment further, having now ascertained the
technical viability of the process,, and its impact upon cataloguing
workflow. I should be most grateful to know whether any other academic
libraries in the UK (other than Glasgow Caledonian University) are doing
something similar, and what, if any, conclusions have been drawn. I am
particularly interested in any attempt to compile a Collection
Development Policy for Internet resources to be included in the Opac.
Please reply to me privately--I shall summarise responses (if any) for
the List.
