Literature Online in the DNER
*****************************
Chadwyck-Healey and the JISC are now working on finalising
a contract and license for HE access to the 'Complete LION
Collection' and FE access to 'LION for Colleges'.
Literature Online was launched in 1996. It brought together
Chadwyck-Healey's full text databases in English and American literature
and enabled users to search them all together, giving easy access to
more than 250,000 works of poetry, prose, and drama. The new JISC
agreement is for the new LION Complete Collection which currently
includes:
The Faber Poetry Library
20th Century English Poetry
20th Century American Poetry
Database of 20th Century African-American Poetry
The English Poetry Full Text Database (plus the recently launched
English Poetry 2)
The American Poetry Full Text Database
African-American Poetry, 1760-1900
English Verse Drama
English Prose Drama
American Drama
19th Century Fiction
18th Century Fiction
Early English Prose Fiction, 1500-1700
Early American Fiction
Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature 1920+
Literary Journals Index in Full Text
Webster's Dictionary
King James Bible
The Complete Collection will continue to grow over the next three
years, but all content will be available to HE subscribers at no
additional cost.
Literature Online for Colleges is a dynamic new online service developed
to support and extend the teaching and study of English literature at
A-level, AS-level, and for the A1 Language Programme of the
International Baccalaureate. It provides primary and secondary
materials geared to the texts, authors, topics, and assessment
objectives set by the Examination Boards in England, Wales and Northern
Ireland and for the International Baccalaureate.
**HE agreement for the Complete LION Collection**
The agreement for HEIs will be offerred on a
cost-recovering basis. Subscription prices in Year 1 of
the three-year agreement will be:
Large £5995 + VAT
Medium £3800 + VAT
Small £2000 + VAT
Very Small £500 + VAT
with banding done in the same way that it was for the
JISC's JSTOR deal (see
http://www.chest.ac.uk/datasets/jstor/sites.html for
banding information). Prices will be capped to an increase of
2.5% each year in years 2 and 3 of the agreement.
This subscription will provide access to the Complete LION
Collection. If yours is one of the HEIs that has
previously upgraded to the Complete Collection, and/or currently
subscribes to material such as American Poetry as a separate
database, then please could you discuss with Andrew Hall
([log in to unmask]) arrangements for any
applicable refund?
We are keen to ensure that no currently subscribing site intending to
participate in the new agreement experiences a gap in provision. For
this reason all current LION subscribers will be switched to the new
LION Complete Collection from 31 December. The
English Corpus was created for the first CHEST/JISC deal which
expires on the 31st December 2000 and will not be avilable after this
date. When license forms (following the JISC Licensing
Principles) become available on the JISC website (e.t.a. January), sites
will need to download, sign, and return forms within two weeks or access
may be switched off. No subscriptions will be collected from sites
until a new subscription agent is appointed by the JISC.
Last but certainly not least, the JISC would like to thank the team at
CHEST for ably managing the previous LION agreements for UKHE.
**LION for Colleges**
With financial support from the Further Education Funding
Councils, the JISC is partially subsidising the cost of
subscriptions for access to LION for FE. Subscriptions
for FE colleges will be:
2001 - £50 + VAT
2002 - £150 + VAT
2003 - £300 + VAT
The deal will run from 1 January 2001 to 31 December 2003.
Colleges may begin participating at any time, but will then
be required to participate from that time until the end of
2003.
