Scotland’s premier library – one of the largest in the UK – is seeking
outstanding candidates for the important post of Head of Cataloguing
Services.
The postholder reports to the Director of General Collections and has
management responsibility for the 22 staff in the Cataloguing Division.
However, he or she will be responsible for determining, implementing and
reviewing cataloguing policies and procedures across the whole Library,
(liaising with colleagues in other departments as appropriate), and
ensuring that all cataloguing carried out in the Library meets agreed
national and international standards. The postholder will supervise the
Library’s participation in co-operative programmes, and its involvement
with external bodies concerned with cataloguing standards and the
provision of bibliographic records.
Applicants must have a good honours degree, and substantial experience
at a senior level in a research-oriented library environment. A
qualification in librarianship or information science would be an
advantage. Applicants must be thoroughly familiar with the online
cataloguing environment, and have experience of AACR2, MARC21, LCSH and
authority control, and be aware of existing standards for the
cataloguing of rare books and of recent developments in metadata for
electronic resources. They must be able to demonstrate excellent
communication and management skills.
