Yvonne, Bernard
People at Florida State have been using portable data capture units to
record in house (public) library use - and reckon they save a huge amount
of clerical and analysis time. There is no exact parallel with recording
journal usage - but I think this is likely to prove the best line to
develop, whether you scan at the reading desk or at a reshelving point.
But so far as I know it is not yet a ready made answer for journals in the
academic library.
For analysis of public library use they have got a lot of interesting data
on a large scale.
Details on their website <www.geolib.org> and among the IFLA Jerusalem
Conference papers under Christie M. Koontz (& colleagues).
The best treatment of the principles in all this remains, in my view,
Geoffrey Ford's booklet (BNBRF Report 43) "Review of methods employed in
determining the use of library stock", 1990.
