Subject: Support for Dyslexic Students

Thanks to everyone who replied to my request for information on services for
dyslexic students. I received 13 responses in total. I have summarised the
replies below, but as an overall impression I would say that everyone wants to
be helpful without disadvantaging non dyslexic students. What is done seems to
be, in part driven by the library management system in use as some things can
be set up automatically, while other institutions have to intervene when
issuing to dyslexic students.
The second general point is about identification of the dyslexic students. Some
places have a code on the student card, some deliberately do NOT have anything
on the card. Between these two there are a variety of scenarios, such as
student having a letter they show or messages on there library details.
The questions:
1. Do you have a special collection for dyslexic students
everyone said no
2. Do you have differential loan periods for the same book? If so how are
reservations affected?
6 places said they had no differential loan periods
The rest had variations on extended loans for short loan items. Short loan in
this context can be anything from 3hrs to 7days, and the extensions varied from
overnight loan at any time of day for 3hr loans to an extra week on 7day
loans. One institutions allowed renewals on items that were normally non
renewable.
Thse that mentioned reservations said they were not affected.
3. Do you waive or reduce overdue charges for dyslexix students? If so, do you
have problems with book returns, especially with reseved books?
Four institutions did not waive charges, all felt taht the arrangements
they had made for differential loan periods were sufficient.
Everyone else mentioned reducing charges on an ad hoc basis and that brought us
back to identification of these students.
4. Do you have special photocopying facilities for dyslexic students? If so who
pays for it?
One institution gives students a cad with £5 on it. Another does
enlargement copying and scanning free.
Almost everyone else mentioned that they can claim photocopying from their
local authorities.
Once again, Thankyou all for your replies, sorry for the delay in posting the
results.
