I notice, as a coda to this, that Elle had a version of her posting on submissiveness published in the LA Record, that tomb of controversial issues.
Are we still as a profession going to blush every time anybody mentions sex. Are we still going to bury our heads away from nasty little right-wing ideas, rather than realise that accurate and balanced information, something we pride ourselves in, is the key to de-bunking those ideas.
I don't really want to roll Elle and Kent in together, because they have nothing in common as far as I am concerned. The attacks on Elle were shameful, those on Kent perfectly justified. But what this has raised is not only an unwillingness to engage with ideas and information which individuals find uncomfortable, but an active attempt to suppress them, ignore them, pretend they do not exist. Ostriches spring to mind.
The information profession is about more than exchanging videos. We cannot allow ourselves to simply ignore issues which we find uncomfortable, because they wont just go away, you know.

It may not be that this Kent, is in favour of statement, but that is not the
point, he is making a point - you then can make your point and thus it is a
discussion. He has put his point and yours, and then the list can decide
which they agree with. If then he doesn't want to accept that and get silly,
its his problem but discussion will have been encouraged.
He holds opinions , right or wrong, which he is entitled to do and in
posting his message on a public discussion list he is standing on a platform
saying "This is what I think," this is really an invitation for people to
come and argue with him ( but it wouldn't be much of a discussion if
everyone agreed from the start).
If he wanted people just to agree with him I think he has bitten off more
than he could chew though eh, but he has got people talking!
I think its also good if its true for Librarians and Info people to be
getting involved, we hold quite a powerful position, rather than just
hiding away not expressing an opinion.

tom

Dear Tom
While I agree entirely with Voltaire's sentiment, the whole point about
Robert Kent is that he is not at all interested in discussing anything. He
has shown himself to be most reluctant to listen to anyone who takes a
view that runs counter to his. He is not using the list to promote
discussion - he is using it to advance his rather biassed views. And that
is not really what I thought the list was for.
