Apologies for cross-posting
"Why should I be a member of the LA? - I get nothing for my money except
the LAR thudding through the letterbox once a month". It's a common
enough refrain in the HE sector.
In my experience, as with all membership organisations, (life, maybe?)
you get back what you put in - and the more you put in, the more benefit
you derive. The Library Association's University College and Research
Group encourages members to participate actively in the Group's affairs
by getting involved with committees at national and regional levels.
What's in it for you? Working with colleagues from institutions across
the sector is rewarding and stimulating and broadens your perspectives.
There are opportunities to develop skills and gain experience which may
not be available in your workplace. Your active contribution to UC&R
demonstrates genuine commitment to CPD to current and prospective future
employers. And there is plenty of enjoyment amidst the hard work and
hard networking; past members of UC&R committees will testify to
contacts and friendships forged which last throughout professional lives
and beyond.
UC&R aims to be a self-confident and lively group, touching the lives of
everyone working in academic libraries, and supporting its members in
providing professional and quality services for users of libraries in
the sector. There is further information about the Group, and contact
details for the national and regional section committees on its website
at www.ucrg.org.uk. Any of the current members of the national
committee would be happy to be contacted for an informal chat about what
is involved in being on the committee - so if you are interested, don't
be deterred by the formality of the nomination process, just get in
touch!
Nominations are now invited from members of UC&R for the positions of
Chair, Vice-Chair, Honorary Secretary, Honorary Assistant Secretary
(Conferences) and Honorary Treasurer of the national committee and for
four committee members. Officers are elected annually; committee members
normally serve a three year term. To co-incide with the LA/IIS vesting
day on 1 April 2002, terms of office may, exceptionally, run for 15
months. Nominations should be proposed and seconded by 2 current
members of UC&R, indicate clearly which post the nomination is for,
countersigned by the nominee, and returned to Clare Powne, (UC&R Hon
Sec), Durham University Library, Stockton Road, DURHAM, DH1 3LY by 15th
