Dear colleagues,
EARL: The Consortium for Public Library Networking is delighted to announce its
5th EARL Annual General Meeting:
Building the People's Network: Content, Training and Technology
This event will take place on:
Wednesday 22nd November 2000 - The British Academy, London
Public Libraries have never been as high on the government agenda as they
are today. Following the publication of the influential reports, New
Library: The People's Network and Building the New Library Network and the
formation of the People's Network Development Team in the latter half of
1999, public libraries are finally being given the national and international recognition that they deserve.
The year 2000 has been an exceptionally busy year for Public Librarians as
practical steps are now being taken to transform these policy visions into
reality. Public Librarians have completed ICT training plans, potentially
two stages of the application process for the NOF-digitise programme, not
to mention PN1 and PN2 forms for Infrastructure allocation. Now as the
year draws to a close it is time to revisit the events of the past year and
reflect on the first stages toward building the People's Network.
Did you and your authority feel that this was a worthwhile experience but
there are things that you would do differently next time?
Do you think that the whole process was well administered, with adequate
support mechanisms to help you through the different applications?
Would just like to exchange ideas with other public librarians who have
been through the same experiences as you have and simply share ideas?
This is where the 5th EARL AGM comes in.
Building The People's Network: Content, Training and Technology is a
structured forum for debate, which will give you the chance to air your
views on the first year process of the development of the People's Network.
Broken down into the three areas of Content, Training and Technology, EARL
has carefully selected Librarians from the Public Library Sector, who have
actively been involved in the process and have taken up the challenge of
presenting their experiences of constructing their bids. Following the more
formal presentations there will be a series of interactive sessions which
will give delegates a chance to air their own views and experiences.
