Hello Anne-Marie.
We are not users of UDC, but we publish it, and I offer this comment in
case it helps.
The indexes to the standard edition (BS 1000M) and pocket edition (PD
1000) of UDC both index 'food' unqualified to UDC 641, under 'Home
economics' and I notice DDC puts it in the same area. Perhaps it should
really be 641/642. Of course there are many other aspects to the study
of food, but those that are not listed under 64... can be linked by
colon. The arrangement would be something like:
641/642 Food, cooking etc (in general)
641:612.3 Nutrition & physiological aspects
641:613 Diet & health aspects
641:614.3 Public health, inspection etc.
641:637 Kinds of produce
641:663 Beverage production
641:664 Food production.
Using the direct decimal divisions, on both sides of the colon, a great
deal of detail can be obtained. UDC is particularly well adapted to
allow users to create custom-built classes in this way.
I hope that helps a bit. But like you, I'd be interested to hear about
user experience.
Regards
Geoffrey Robinson

Hi everyone.
I have classification question that hopefully someone could help with.
We use UDC and are having problems classifying food. We want to keep
all
the items about food together, but UDC has three or four different
areas
that cover food.
Does anyone out there use UDC and if so how do you classify food?
Thank you in advance for any help.
Cheers
Ann-Marie
