Information Services at the University of Birmingham is
looking very strongly towards PCounter as the system for
printing control across all its clusters. We are contemplating
a pilot scheme for the cluster in our medical library with the
intention of extending it to other clusters (eg in the Main
Library and open access cluster rooms) in due course if
everything proves to work successfully. (It's already used in
some School based clusters and there might be long term scope
for total integration across campus in due course.)
We are also investigating the use of the wall-mounted 'Money
Loader' box marketed by ICS for use with PCounter. I've sent
Altman & Associates and ICS some questions we want answered,
but I am also seeking further information from colleagues who
already have experience of using these systems.
Amongst a number of technical concerns we also have a number
of general points that need clarifying. For example, is there
any 'hidden' administrative load that is likely to fall on the
shoulders of IS staff who are not regularly supporting
computer clusters? If anyone is using a Money Loader box, does
it present any problems relating to security both from the
computing and the cash point of view?
I have already had some helpful information from the
University of Huddersfield, but if anyone else has experience
of this sort of a set-up in a similar environment I would
appreciate any information you can supply.
Thanks,
Malcolm Kendall
