Hello,
Here, in Israel, we are now in the process of developing standards for
public libraries, including staffing guidelines for various positions. We
would like to hear from your experience regarding the staff requirements
for the position of PROGRAMMING LIBRARIAN, responsible for cultural,
recreational and informational programs for adults and children (lectures,
reading promotion activities, etc). More specifically, the director of a
public library in a city with a population of 150,000 has several pressing
questions, which she would like to solve before the standards are published:
1. Do you have such a position or it is included among the overall
responsibilities of reference or other librarians?
2. What should be, in your opinion, the scope of a position for the
organisation of ten programmes each month?
3. Do you think the "ideal candidate" should be a librarian, or it would be
desirable to hire a specialist in the organisation of such programmes?
Replies to either of us would be greatly appreciated.
