   2nd October 2000

====================================== Information about NISS Services ==

** Ovid PsycINFO service now available via NISS Biomed
   ---------------------------------------------------

Produced by The American Psychological Association, PsycINFO is a
comprehensive source for bibliographic coverage of psychology and
behavioral sciences literature. The database also includes the special
subset files PsycLIT and ClinPSYC.

If you are interested in the fields of Education, Linguistics, Medicine,
Nursing, Pharmacology, Physiology, Psychiatry, Sociology or related
topics, PsycINFO will prove a valuable addition to your personal
collection of information sources.

Access to PsycINFO is now available via an Ovid interface on the NISS
Biomed server. Users who already have some experience of other Ovid
services will welcome the integration of PsycINFO with other biomedical
resources on Biomed. This means for example, that existing Biomed full
text subscribers can link seamlessly to their full text - allowing you to
link to the full text and back to PsycINFO, as well as limit your searches
to those articles for which you have the full text.

(Please note however, that integration with other Biomed databases will
not be available when using a trial account - see below for more details
about how to request a free trial.)

New users will quickly discover too that the Ovid PsycINFO
implementation presents a sophisticated, yet easy to use service. Features
such as the unique mapping process that lets you map natural language
terms to the controlled PsycINFO vocabulary, and powerful vocabulary tools
such as the thesaurus and tree display which mean that you can access the
controlled vocabulary directly, all help to improve the quality and
relevance of search results.

If you wish to make use of PsycINFO on a regular basis, a number of
customisation features will help make each user session more efficient and
effective, reducing the time you need spend to find the information you
want. Just two of these extra features are Save Searches, which removes
the need for re-entry of specific search criteria, and then AutoAlerts
can also be created that will automatically run a saved search each time
the database is updated and email the results to your mailbox.

The PsycINFO database currently contains 1.6 million records (1.1
million with abstracts). Approximately 57,000 records are added each year.
The types of documents referenced include: journal articles (from 1,500
titles), dissertation abstracts, chapters, books (authored, edited, and
other), reports, and secondary publications. Coverage is from 1887 to the
present, and updates are made on a monthly basis.

If your institution would like to participate in a free one month trial of
the Ovid PsycINFO service please:

* email [log in to unmask] with your request for a username and
password

AND

* visit the CHEST website at: http://www.chest.ac.uk/datasets/psycinfo/
and download, complete, and return to CHEST, two copies of the APA Licence
Agreement, and 2 copies of the Ovid CHEST Licence.

Further information about the PsycINFO database and its content can be

** EBSCO MasterFILE service
   ------------------------

We should like to take this opportunity to remind users that the CHEST
agreement for EBSCO MasterFILE ended on 30th September 2000, and as a
result the NISS EBSCO MasterFILE Service has now closed.

A number of the sites that subscribed to MasterFILE have already
moved to other databases from EBSCO (Academic Search Elite, Business
Source Elite, and Business source Premier). If your site is interested in
obtaining access to these resources please visit the CHEST page at
http://www.chest.ac.uk/datasets/ebsco/ for further details.
