Head of User Services (ALC2)


This is a demanding post in the major research led university library which
serves a large and diverse range of users drawn from the University of
London, Higher Education Research Institutions and the wider academic,
professional and private research communities.

We are seeking a forward looking and enthusiastic person, to lead a team
delivering a range of core user services and assisting in planning and
implementing development initiatives. Areas of responsibility will include
membership, circulation and stack services, inter-library loans and
reprographics. You will also make a key contribution to other areas
including staff training and development, user education and surveys, and
the development of self-service facilities.

Educated to graduate level with a relevant postgraduate qualification, you
should have at least three years experience of staff management and possess
excellent communication skills. The successful applicant will have a sound
knowledge and interest in CIT and be committed to delivering and developing
a high quality user focussed service.

Starting salary in the range £21,616-£27,347 (incl. L.A.)

UNIVERSITY OF LONDON LIBRARY
Assistant Conservator (CRA4)
[Superannuable fixed-term post, to the end of July 2002]

An exciting opportunity to further your conservation experience working in
a busy research led University Library as a member of an integrated
Historic Collections Service.

Your role will be to offer conservation and preservation support, involving
assessing the condition and carrying out necessary conservation to
pamphlets, printed books and manuscripts on paper. You will construct
conservation packaging, compile and maintain statistics on work undertaken
and have the opportunity to assist in Library promotional work. You will
also deputise for the Conservation and Preservation Officer within agreed
guidelines in their absence.

The successful applicant should possess sound knowledge and relevant
experience. You will be responsible to the Library's Preservation and
Conservation Officer, but need to be able to work unsupervised to
pre-determined output levels. Experience in pamphlet conservation,
conservation packaging and/or exhibition work would be an advantage.

This post receives support from the RSLP Access Strand Funding

UNIVERSITY OF LONDON LIBRARY
Historic Collections Project Assistant (CRA2)


Would you like gain valuable training and experience working with Historic
Collections in a busy research led University Library?

If so, we invite you to apply for this post. The one-year superannuable
appointment will provide basic cataloging and clerical assistance for
projects in which the University Library is involved.

Your duties will include fetching and re-shelving material to be
catalogued, carrying out initial searches of databases, usually Innopac,
CURL and RLIN, and assisting with basic editing, in addition to various
clerical duties that may be required to assist the progress of the
projects. There will also be opportunities to provide general assistance
to the wider Historic Collections Team.

Ideally in addition to an interest in Historical Collections, you will have
excellent keyboarding skills and the ability to work systematically and
accurately as part of a team. Experience of an academic environment and
knowledge of one European language other than English would be useful.

Historic Collections Administrator (CRA4)


We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the
Historic Collections team which embraces Rare Books/Special Collections;
Archives and Manuscripts; Palaeography; Preservation/Conservation and
serves a diverse research led community from within the University of
London and beyond.

You will be responsible for providing day-to-day administrative support to
the services and operations of the section. The responsibilities of the
postholder are varied and offer an excellent opportunity for an
enthusiastic person with a lively interest in Historic Collections to gain
a practical overview of this field. There are also excellent opportunities
to gain experience of web-based and CIT applications and developments.

Experience of working in an academic or research library environment,
together with a demonstrable interest in at least one of the areas within
Historic Collections is essential. You should possess excellent I/T
skills, have the working knowledge of at least one European Language and
the ability to work without close supervision and meet deadlines.

2 Library Auxiliaries - User Services (CRA2)


Would you like to gain valuable training and experience in a busy research
led University Library?

If so, we invite you to apply for these posts. You will receive training
and experience assisting with the provision of a wide range of user
services. These will include issue, return and renewal of books, handling
user enquiries and servicing the Closed Stacks. There will also be the
opportunity to undertake varied project work in other parts of the Library
including work in our Bibliographic and Periodicals Sections and assistance
with stock moves and reorganisation of space.

Full training will be given but previous experience of working with the
general public, including cash handling, is desirable. You should possess
excellent interpersonal and communication skills and have competence with
computers and keyboarding skills. These one-year superannuable posts would
provide an excellent opportunity for someone who wished to gain valuable
practical experience in a library environment before embarking on
pre-library school studies.

Senior Library Assistant
Special Projects Cataloguing (CRA3/4)


Would you like to join the project team of a busy and dynamic major UK
Academic Research Library?

If so, we invite you to apply for this post. Together with a small
dedicated team, the two-year superannuable appointment will primarily
assist with special projects cataloguing, including the RSLP Funded Book
History, 19th Century Pamphlets and Music Scores.

Your duties will include searching databases to identify matching records,
downloading and editing, and creating original records where necessary,
using UKMARC and AACR2. From time to time, there may be opportunities to
assist the Bibliographic Services Section with mainstream cataloguing work
outside the immediate scope of the projects.

Together with practical experience of on-line cataloguing, you will have
proven experience or have received training in UKMARC and AACR2. The
ability to work without close supervision and combine speed of work with
attention to detail and accuracy is essential. Knowledge of at least one
European language other than English is useful. An appointment will be
made in the CRA3-4 range according to ability and experience.

Senior Library Assistant - User Services (CRA3)


Would you like to join the team providing user services in a busy research
led University Library?

If so, we invite you to apply for this post. Your duties will include user
service activities, such as the issue, return and renewal of books,
handling routine user enquiries and fetching material from the Closed
Stack, with specific responsibility in one or more areas of administration
which includes reservations, inter-library loans and photocopying services.
 You will also undertake membership and registration duties for a large and
diverse membership.

Together with previous experience of work in a customer service
environment, you will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
and be able to relate well to the needs of library customers. The ability
to work accurately with attention to detail is essential as is basic
competence with the use of computers and keyboarding skills. Previous
library experience would be advantageous.

Starting salary in the range £14,174 - £16,072 (incl. L.A.)
