Introducing The RDN Virtual Training Suite : a new teaching resource for
Library and Information Workers

Are you involved in training students or researchers to use the Internet?
Would you like to learn about a new resource that can help you?
This workshop will introduce you to the RDN Virtual Training Suite, a
national initiative, funded by JISC, to teach Internet skills to the UK
academic community. It is composed of a number of self-guided tutorials in
subject areas which include Politics, Social Work, Medicine, Economics,
Sociology and Law. Each one provides a guide to the key Internet sites for
the subject, advice on how users can improve their Internet searching skills
and critically evaluate the resources they find. Practical examples
examples of Internet use in teaching and learning are given. The workshop
also includes an overview of recent developments in the Social Science
Information Gateway (SOSIG), including its new interface and customisation
features.
The three hour workshop will provide :
* an overview of the types of skills that can be included in Internet
training sessions
* An examination of the aims and content of the RDN
virtual Training suite. This will include practical sessions
exploring individual tutorials and suggestions of how you might use them in
your training
* An overview of recent developments at SOSIG and
their relevance to information workers
* Details of other online training materials available on the web
All participants will receive handouts with background information and
hints and tips for future use. Session leaders will include: Heather
Dawson (Assistant Librarian LSE Library/ SOSIG Subject Editor for
Government and Politics), Emma Place (Manager of the Virtual Training
Suite Project, based at the Institute for Learning and Research
Technology, University of Bristol), Lesly Huxley (SOSIG Training and
Liaison Manager), Melanie Peffer (Customer Services Librarian, Department
of Health)
There will be opportunities to ask questions and engage in hands on
activities.
Cost: £20.00 ASSIGN members, £25.00 non-members
This includes all handouts and mid-afternoon refreshments.
Places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment.
Please note that individual PCS will be available at the London
session, they will be shared in pairs at the Bristol workshop.
