Earth Sciences Librarian

The Earth Sciences Library of The Natural History Museum, incorporates the
Palaeontology, Mineralogy and Anthropology library collections, as well as
the Geological Map Collections. Part of the Museum Library and Archives,
the Earth Sciences Library, continues to develop its world class collection
and provide information to scientists, geologists and researchers from
around the world.
With the current Earth Sciences Librarian you will be responsible for the
management, development and marketing of subject resources and services.
Your duties will include the management of subject budgets, helping
generate income, liasing with museum staff and users, provision of user
education and activities and managing preservation activities.
You will be responsible for the management of the library and the staff in
the subject team including 2 Assistant Librarians and 2 Information
Assistants. As a senior member of staff you will be expected to contribute
to wider departmental initiatives.
You should have a degree, preferably in Earth Sciences or a related subject
and a postgraduate qualification (or equivalent) in Librarianship or
Information Studies, and previous experience in a library or information
services environment. It is essential that the candidate has experience of
personnel management, knowledge of preservation methods and approaches and
conservation processes, experience of delivering information handling
skills to library users and above all good interpersonal and communications
skills.

BIOME Project Assistant
Department of Library and Information Services
Two Temporary positions
Starting Salary 17,837 per annum
The Department of Library and Information Services at The Natural History
Museum is looking for two self-motivated and enthusiastic individuals to
assist in a project to collect and describe quality Internet resources
relating to the natural world. BIOME is a collaborative project within the
UK Resource Discovery Network, which aims to facilitate access to quality
educational resources in the health and life sciences; The Natural History
Museum is co-ordinating the natural world component to BIOME.
These posts involve selecting, evaluating, describing and applying metadata
to Internet resources. Successful candidates will have a first degree in a
biological science, experience of standard office software packages and
knowledge of and an interest in the Web environment. The ability to write
fluent and concise English is essential to this role and knowledge of
library standards such as DDC/LCSH would be desirable.
The appointments will be for 6 or 12 months in the first instance.
