I don't know about courses, but if you just want to do simple repairs on
non-valuable material, without getting into work that needs professional
conservation or bookbinding, the following book from Don Gresswell
<http://www.gresswell.com> might be of use:
* Bookcraft : simple techniques for maintenance and repair.
GBP1.80.
"Clear step-by-step illustrations show how to identify damage
and perform simple repairs. Includes a list of supplies and
tools needed to do the work." - supplier's catalogue.
You could also try the following (information from bol.com Web site
<http://www.uk.bol.com/>):
* Basic book repair methods / by Abraham A. Schechter. -
Libraries Unlimited, 1999. - Paperback : ISBN 1563087006.
Publisher's price: GBP31.95; BOL price: GBP28.76.
"This practical manual shows readers how to preserve cloth-bound
library books. It gives detailed instructions for the cleaning
and mending of paper, book hinge repair, case and textblock re-
attachment, cloth rebacking and retitling. It describes
procedures chronologically and illustrates them with black and
white photographs. Supply lists are provided with each procedure
and a bibliography of supporting literature is also included.
These simple-to-learn steps are geared primarily to nonvaluable
material and can be used as easily by nonprofessionals as
professionals. The book can be used as a repair manual in
libraries or as a training tool."
* Book repair : a how-to-do-it manual for librarians / by Kenneth
Lavender. - Neal-Schuman Publishers, 1992. - 150p. - Paperback :
ISBN 1555701035, - Publisher's price: GBP33.95; BOL price:
GBP30.56.
"Here's a guide to both basic book repair techniques and sound
conservation advice and alternatives. The basic repair
techniques include cleaning, mending, hinge and spine repair,
strengthening paperbacks, and enclosures, all illustrated for
"easy-to-follow" use. Clear presentation of basic techniques and
procedures are coupled with a discussion of the criteria and
decision-making process of repair decisions. Alternative
conservation practices are suggested to enable each librarian to
develop procedures that are appropriate to the specific library,
its materials, and its users."
* Cleaning, repairing and caring for books : a practical manual /
by Robert L. Shep. - Richard Joseph Publishers, 1991. - 148p. -
Hardback : ISBN 1872699022. - Publisher's price: GBP10.95; BOL
price: GBP9.86
"A practical manual describing in simple terms how to repair,
clean and restore books. It has been written with both American
and British book bibliographies in mind. Sources of supplies are
listed."
I have not seen any of these books so cannot give any evaluative comment
or recommendations. No doubt there are many other books on this topic.
