 ====================================== Information about NISS Services ==

** Clover trial
   ------------

A free trial for evaluation purposes of the NISS Clover Service began on
Monday 17th July and will continue until the end of August. The service
provides online access to indexes of newspaper and magazine articles
supplied by Clover Publications, and can be accessed via the NISS page at
http://www.niss.ac.uk/lis/subscription.html or directly at
http://clover.niss.ac.uk/

Additional details included below are extracted from the message
circulated recently by CHEST about the trial period.

"CHEST and Clover are pleased to announce a free evaluation of the Clover
Online Newspaper Index and Information Index from the 17th July to 31st
August 2000.

The procedure to gain access is as follows:

1. go to http://clover.niss.ac.uk/ (n.b. no 'www' in front)
2. click on the index you want to search (Newspaper or Information)
3. enter the following username - ch_clovertrial
4. enter the following password bothpd33
5. perform your search

Access is totally free to any library or individual.

Please find below more detailed information provided by Clover about these
Indexes.

'The Clover on the Web services, available via NISS through a CHEST
Agreement, consists of two parts, The Newspaper Index and the Information
Index.

The Newspaper Index

The Newspaper Index on the Web is a comprehensive index providing quick
access to the full range of quality daily and Sunday newspapers,including
all their supplements and magazines. Also covered are a number of
essential weekly news magazines.

The full coverage is:-
*Daily Telegraph,
*Financial Times,
*Guardian,
*Independent,
*Times,
*Observer,
*Sunday Times,
*Economist,
*Times Education Supplement,
*Times Higher Education Supplement,
*Times Literary Supplement.

The Information Index

The Information Index is a subject index to popular periodicals ...
periodicals like Scientific American are indexed alongside ones like
Country Life and Good Housekeeping ... our main concern is to produce an
information tool enabling users to find articles on a very wide range of
subjects rather than concentrating on blanket coverage of certain titles.'"

** StudentZone additions
   ---------------------

NISS's StudentZone site is growing again with further additions to its
'Academic section' at http://www.studentzone.org.uk/academic/

New subject pages have been added under the 'Resources by Subject'
heading, and these include:

* Anatomy
* Anthropology
* Botany
* Dentistry
* Environmental Science
* Journalism
* Linguistics
* Oceanography
* Zoology

Each of these new subject pages leads to information about courses and
research, employment, societies and associations, and other subject-
related online resources. These pages incorporate more than 200 new links
to information.

Other subject pages in the Academic section that existed previously are
also being updated and enhanced, with new links added where appropriate.

** EduServ now a MCSP
   ------------------

EduServ (home to Athens, CHEST and NISS) has recently become a MCSP
(Microsoft Certified Solutions Provider) member.

In its (website) overview of the MCSP Program, Microsoft explains that
"Microsoft Certified Solution Providers (MCSPs) are independent companies
that provide IT services and IT products based on Microsoft technologies
to corporate, government and small business customers. MCSP membership is
26,000 strong worldwide ... The MCSP Program is designed to increase
members' technical competency and business proficiency."

NISS does not use Microsoft technologies exclusively, but we shall
nevertheless look forward to investigating how these suggested benefits of
membership might improve the services we provide to users.
