The official launch of OPEN LIBR@RY, the Open University
Library's new
service for its 180,000 distance learning students and 7,000
Associate
Lecturers, who are located across the world, took place
during the
Open University's Open Day.
OPEN LIBR@RY aims to:
* provide a range of information resources relevant to
OU courses
* help students to develop skills and confidence in
using electronic
resources
* help students identify and make use of libraries in
their local area
* offer support and advice on all aspects of library
use and
information seeking
As well as providing access to around 4,000 electronic
journals, many of
them in full text, OPEN LIBR@RY is also the home of a range
of other
resources which are appropriate to the special needs of Open
University
students.
ROUTES (Resources for Open University Teachers and Students)
is a database
of Internet resources which have been identified by Open
University staff as
being useful for specific courses. Sixty of the OU's courses
are included at
present and more courses and links are being added every
month. The use of
ROADS software enables OU librarians to check and maintain
the links.
The Access to Higher Education Libraries database on OPEN
LIBR@RY has been
extensively researched by the OU's librarians in conjunction
with academic
library colleagues and is designed to help Open University
students to find
out what is available to help them in their studies in their
local area.
Other useful features of OPEN LIBR@RY include links to core
reference books
and classic texts in electronic form and a "Guides to using
resources" page
which links to advice on planning searches, searching the
Internet, citing
references and using electronic databases.
