We are developing our current awareness page for our company intranet. Does
anyone have knowledge / experience of how copyright applies in relation to
newspaper articles? If we pay a subscription fee to a database from which we
obtain the original article, is it an infringement of copyright to then put
parts of the article (even if acknowledged) onto the Intranet? If we write a
summary of the article and acknowledge the source (including that it is a
summary not the original), is this acceptable?
I understand that under fair dealing it is acceptable to copy from a work for
the purposes of reporting current events, but it is not acceptable to produce
multiple copies. Would an intranet site be regarded as 'multiple copies' as it
is reaching multiple computers and readers?
Any ideas or guidance on this issue would be gratefully received!
