Apologies for cross posting and very short notice
The Southern Branch free evening event takes place on Tuesday 13th June,
18.30hrs at The City Pride pub, 28 Farringdon Lane, EC1, nearest underground
Farringdon. Please note the change of venue for this meeting only and let
your friends and colleagues know.
Next week's talk is about data gathering in accident investigation. The
talk will last about 40 mintues and will be followed by free light
refreshments and a chance to socialise with other information workers and to
ask the speaker any questions. Members of the Institute of Information
Scientists and non members are both very welcome.
Peter Mellor, of the Software Reliability Centre at The City
University, has made a special study of safety-critical aircraft
systems and Airbus products, in particular.
In 1994, an Airbus A300 crashed in Nagoya, Japan and the relatives of
those killed in the accident are suing both the manufacturer and the
Airline. One of the key issues concerns the reliability of the
software.
Peter has spent several periods in Nagoya on the case as an Expert
Witness. He will show a video simulation of what happens in the
cockpit during an air crash, discuss how Expert Witnesses work and
talk about the problems of finding and presenting reliable information
to support a case where so much depends on the outcome.
