Recently, I asked colleagues to share their experiences of dealing with
final year students, leaving FE Colleges with outstanding Learning Resource
Centre materials. It soon became apparent from the replies that it is a
common problem and a number of colleagues asked me to forward any
suggestions/ideas. Therefore, I will summarise responses:
Firstly, a number of institutions had enforced a refundable book deposit.
Various amounts were suggested (the most common were ?25 - ?30). This was
payable when students joined the Learning Resource Centre, and was only
given back at the end of the year when all items/fines had been
returned/paid.
Secondly, some colleagues suggested delaying the awarding of certificates
until Learning Resource Centre materials were returned. The problem for a
number of FE institutions is that they do not award their own certificates,
so refusal to issue qualifications is not an option. However, delaying
qualifications was particularly successful for those students who needed
their certificates to enrol on HE courses.
Other ideas centred around fines amnesties, bringing forward expiry dates
requiring student who wish to continue borrowing to get authorisation from
a member of teaching staff. Another suggestion was withdrawing computer
rights from those students who have outstanding items.
Could I take this opportunity to thank those colleagues who replied. It has
certainly given some food for thought!
Regards,
Sarah Crossland.
