1. "Auf Wiedersehen" to Trainer Simon Hume
Netskills Trainer Simon Hume is leaving us after 2 years to take up a
position with Compaq as an e-commerce support specialist in Munich.
Simon says, "I've enjoyed working at Netskills and am sorry to say
goodbye to many friendly and familiar faces we meet at Netskills
events. Compaq have asked me to write a training course for them which
I don't think will be a problem after 2 years at Netskills. Look
forward to introducing the Netskills recipe in Europe".
2. New Workshop - "Managed Learning Environments with WebCT"
This workshop has been developed in response to an increasing interest
in the area of online teaching and learning. With the increasing
sophistication of learning and teaching material on the web, and the
high expectations of students, both on campus and through distance
learning, about the use of new technology, many educational
organisations are turning to Managed (or Virtual) Learning
Environments. These web-based environments offer not only facilities
to structure learning content, but also provide student management,
communication and assessment tools, and a range of other useful
functions.
This is a practical workshop aimed at lecturers, teachers, learning
technologists or support staff who have used the web for learning and
teaching and wish to explore the sophisticated features offered by
managed learning environments. Whilst this workshop is based around
WebCT, many features and concepts are equally applicable to other
learning environments.
The workshop is scheduled for July 5th at Newcastle University. For

4. Training Module of the Month
**Cascading Style Sheets**
Many people now have basic HTML/web authoring skills and would like to
know more advanced techniques for improving the appearance and
management of their sites. Cascading Style Sheets are an advanced HTML
technique which is used to give much finer control over the appearance
of web pages. Using style sheets can also lead to better
information/content management because content and formatting
instructions may be separated. Style sheets are also increasingly
relevant with the advent of XML. This training module consists of a
set of presentation slides including speaker's notes typically of 30
minutes duration, and a set of hands-on exercises. Look out for the
exercise about William Shakespeare writing a new play using style
sheets.
Experience required:
Basic HTML/web authoring. Knowledge of basic HTML tags such as those
for including images and hypertext links is expected.
Software required:
Netscape 4.0 or above or Internet Explorer 3.0 or above. A text
editor such as Notepad is also required.
