Dear Colleagues,
The JISC is pleased to announce further details about its
agreement with Chadwyck-Healey for access to KnowUK and
PCI Full Text. Both agreements will be managed by CHEST on
behalf of the JISC.
1. KnowUK for HE
This is a 3 year agreement, as outlined in JISC Circular
03/00 (which is available at
http://www.jisc.ac.uk/pub00/c03_00.html). The
subscription fees are:
Year 1 = £2,995 plus VAT
Year 2 = £3,115 plus VAT
Year 3 = £3,239 plus VAT
This buys the subscribing site a licence for 2 concurrent
users. Additional users are 10% of the above plus VAT
(e.g. £300 plus VAT in year 1). Sites must purchase any
additional concurrent users at the time of subscribing.
2. PCI Full Text for HE
This is a one year agreement only (and otherwise is as
outlined in JISC Circular 03/00 which is available at
http://www.jisc.ac.uk/pub00/c03_00.html). Subscription
fees are:
Large HEIs = £5,000 + VAT
Medium HEIs = £3,500 + VAT
Small HEIs = £2,500 + VAT
Please note that this subscription price is subsidised by
the JISC in order to help sites transition from the
heavily-subsidised PCI service to the new PCI Full Text
service.
Chadwyck-Healey has agreed that the JISC may nominate up to
25% of the journal titles to be digitised for PCI Full Text
in its first year. A list of potential titles and an
invitation to nominate will be circulated shortly to the UKHE
community via lis-sconul, with announcements also made on
other lists that the consultation is taking place.
The original agreement between Chadwyck-Healey and the JISC
for PCI (not full text) was managed by CHEST and expired at
the end of March 2000. Chadwyck-Healey has graciously
permitted continued access to this database via EDINA at no
cost UNTIL THE END OF JUNE 2000. This allows for 1 month
of overlap with the new PCI Full Text service. PLEASE CAN
YOU LET END USERS KNOW THAT THE JISC-SPONSORED SERVICE AT
EDINA WILL END on 30 June? Thanks!
Finally, on behalf of the JISC, I would like to thank the
staff at EDINA for all their hard work in delivering a fine
PCI service for the last 5 years.
3. Know UK for FE
FE colleges that complete CHEST licence forms can become
authorised to use this product WITH NO CHARGE for one year.
The entire subscription will be subsidised by the JISC with
funds from the Further Education Funding bodies in order to
facilitate evaluation of demand for this product in the FE
sector. Colleges will have access to a pool of 60
concurrent users.
For those of you who may not be familiar with this
product…
KnowUK is an information service on the World Wide Web
which provides key information on the people, places,
institutions and organisations which make up, influence and
govern the United Kingdom. It enables users
to search key sources of reference information, drawing
together over sixty five of the most authoritative
reference materials in any library, such as Who' s Who, The
Municipal Yearbook and Debrett's People of Today. Content
has almost tripled since KnowUK's launch in January 1998 to
over 600,000 records and is constantly growing.
Using KnowUK is easy. There is a new one-box search
function enabling users to search the sources with a single
word or phrase. More advanced users can choose an advanced
search option, selecting individual publications or a
combination of sources.
Features and Benefits include:
* The most up-to-date reference information
* Cross-searching of all sources through a single interface
* Access across the whole institution
We anticipate that this resource will be of great
interest to students and staff. Senior college
administrators might find it a useful tool, for example,
because it will put these reference books on their desktops.

4. PCI Full Text for FE

product in the FE sector. Colleges will have access to a
pool of 60 concurrent users.
For those of you who may not be familiar with this
product...
PCI Full Text combines the PCI index with new access to the
full text of selected journals. At 1 June 2000 it provides
an electronic index to 3,035 journals in the humanities and
social sciences, from their first issues to 1990. It
comprises more than 10.5 million article records, the
earliest dating from 1770, and adds up to one million new
records every year. In March 2000 the PCI index was
enhanced by the launch of PCI Full Text, adding scanned
images of journal articles to the article records. It
currently provides online access to the full images of more
than 50,000 articles from 9 journals in the humanities and
social sciences and during June it will add 45,000 more
articles from another 13 journals, and within 12 months
will cover the complete runs of 100 journals.
MOVING FORWARD
It is anticipated that contractual negotiations between
CHEST and Chadwyck-Healey will be completed by 1 July.
Chadwyck-Healey, however, is keen to launch these services
from 1 June (today!). If your institution is interested in
participating in the agreement outlined herein during the
month of June, you will need to provide information
about your IP addresses to:

When CHEST licence forms are complete, sites will
need to complete the forms before gaining access to the
services. Information about the availability of these
forms will be circulated to the community via
email.
Many thanks for your time and kind attention, and please do
not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or
concerns.
Cheers,
Alicia
