I agree completely. If the Professional Body won't stand up for its members
then who else will?
This is the response given by Kate Wood to the same question from the
lis-la-charter list a few days ago.
The LA accepts advertisements sent in for LA Appointments, but it also vets
them for salaries offered. Employers offering salaries below recommended
levels are contacted by LA staff to explain exactly what a librarian has to
offer and to suggest a review of the salary before an appointment is made.
This does not always work, but it does produce results in a number of
instances.
Kate Wood
In my opinion they should refuse to accept ads from those organizations who do
not adhere to the salary guidelines set by the LA. It is condoning exploitation
of professional qualified staff by doing so. Catherine is right, people have to
go for undervalued positions to pay the bills but our professional body doesn't
have to force them into it by allowing such practices.
