Dear Colleagues
I do agree that doctors deserve every penny that they get, and compared to
media types, and eg IT specialists in the private sector, their salaries are
not even generous. And would any of us like to be on call on Christmas
Day!!
However I do sometimes get a little fed up at our salaries being lumped in
with teachers when we earn much less. Sandra made an interesting point
about librarians, teachers and nurses not being the self promotion types.
However it is nurses and teachers that I personally associate with fairly
hard line placard waving. And things finally seem to be improving for them
- my colleague is leaving to become a teacher, principally for her own
development but also for the money! As a PGCE student in modern languages
she will get about £10,000!
My salary as a chartered librarian with its exciting (!) annual increments
only ever seems to keep pace with a teacher's starting salary and I do find
that a little frustrating. Especially when you still see jobs advertised
for school librarians which offer a pro-rata salary. I think teachers would
be horrified if you accused them of being part-time on account of the
holidays!!
Enough said. I think teachers and nurses deserve the recent improvents in
their renumeration. Maybe it will be our turn next! But when all is said
and done I chose to be a librarian, and I am lucky to have a very privileged
working environment which brings its own rewards. (Though an academic grade
salary rather than the APT & C scale would be nice...........)
And gosh, if we weren't librarians then we wouldn't have the wonderful forum
that is lis-link (or the time to contribute to it), would we!
Best wishes
