I am currently conducting an evaluation of the video and audio cassette
collection in our Resouces Centre, and there are a couple of points on
which I would welcome comments.
Firstly, the official advice from sites such as Cool is that video and
audio tape starts to deteriorate after about ten years. I have checked a
couple of videos recorded in the early 1980s and could not detect any
significant deterioration, even though our storage conditions are a bit on
the warm and damp side! Has anyone experienced deterioration in quality
on tapes kept this long?
Secondly, does anyone know of any archiving processes for educational
materials on audio/video? We have recordings of BBC programmes, OU
programmes, commercially produced tapes of both sorts, etc. I would hate
to delete the last copy of something - does anyone know of any
organisation which collects this kind of material from
the 70s/80s? Should I consider archiving anything, if so, what?!
Many thanks.
