Thanks for your response last week to the Hack from the Mirror. She mailed
me to thank us all "you have made my morning", and said she was "off to
Cornwall for a few days" (journalese for 'Beam me up, Scotty'?).
Some of you felt such features just reinforce the image - Vicki referred to a
damaging recent episode of 'Coronation Street'. Gilbert thought journalists
shouldn't reinforce their own stereotype by rehashing cliches to fill
columns!
Some of you recommended some a-typical role models, like a colleague at
Oxford Brookes featured in the latest LA careers brochure, and a legal
Librarian (and cover-girl!) on the Feb LA Record.
Some even kindly offered yourselves! Many thanks to: Helen, a Morris-dancer
in New Zealand; Ann, a former rally-driver; Georgia, who moonlights on sirdu
drums; and John, who used to write scripts for the Beano and cracks a mean
thumb!
Vicky thinks we responded to type by being too PC and not lightening up.
Strangely, no-one commented on the apparent oxymoron of 'High-Class
supplement' and 'Daily Mirror'. So now we've just got to find someone who
reads it ... !
