ESRC Post Graduate Training Guidelines
The ESRC is currently revising its handbook relating to post
graduate training (they have not been revised since 1996).
Whilst the ESRC itself is preparing a draft document in relation to
research methods (Framework for Research Methods Training -
see ESRC web pages), those working in subject specific areas
have been asked to help prepare guidelines under subject area
headings.
The Socio-legal Studies and Criminology Post-Graduate Training
Guidelines Review Panel charged with this task is as follows:
Professor Rod Morgan (Law Dept. Bristol)
Dr Andrew Willis (Scarman Centre, University of Leicester)
Professor Lynda Warren (Dept. of Law, Aberystwyth)
Professor David Smith (Centre for Law and Society, University of
Edinburgh)
Professor Betsy Stanko (ESRC Violence Programme, Royal
Holloway, Univ. London.)
Dr Loraine Gelsthorpe (Institute of Criminology, Cambridge)
Loraine Gelsthorpe is the Chair of this group.
The Review Group is considering matters under four headings:
1) Scope/Definition of the nature of the subject area
2) Preparation (i.e. what skills/knowledge the student should have
before Research Training begins)
3) Subject specific domains of expertise (covering the broad
intellectual context of the area including theoretical and
philosophical considerations)
4) Research Methods Training (Methods of data collection and
methods of data analysis - which are not covered in the Framework
for Research Methods Training but which are seen as essential for
socio-legalists and criminologists)
The Review Group will be circulating a draft set of subject specific
guidelines c. mid September, but meanwhile would welcome any
immediate comments that colleagues wish to make regarding post
graduate training in the areas of Socio-legal Studies and
Criminology. Comments in relation to the above four headings
would be especially welcome.
Comments should be sent to :
