French in Contact
Colloquium proposal at the Third International Symposium on
Bilingualism (18-20 April 2001)
At the conference I would like to bring together
researchers working on different aspects of language
contact in relation to French.
I have added a description below. Suggestions for
contributions are very welcome.
More information about the conference can be found on the
following website.

Description:
French in Contact
This colloquium will focus on the way French interacts with other languages around the world.
The emphasis will be on how French changes under the
influence of language contact in different contact
situations around the world. More precisely, we want to
discuss the following:
* Which aspects of French grammar are stable in language
contact, and little inclined to change (eg basic word
order) ?
* Which aspects of French grammar are very receptive to
change (eg nominal gender, A+N, N+A order, accord du
participe passé, adjective-noun agreement)
* Depth of contact: is it possible to compare the depth of
contact across different language contact situations (eg
with the help of Thomason and Kaufman's borrowing scale)?
* To what extent does French borrow structural aspects of
other languages (syntactic or phonological rules etc.)?
* How can we provide evidence for internal versus external
factors in language change?
* Which social factors seem to promote intensity of
language contact?
* Which role does code-switching play in language change?
with best wishes
