          International Colloquium on:
'INSTRUCTED SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNING'

            August 24-26, 2000
     University of Brussels (VUB), Belgium

Main Organizers: Alex Housen and Michel Pierrard

The purpose of this colloquium is to bring together researchers from the
fields of second language acquisition, language pedagogy, applied
linguistics and psychology, to reflect on the following issues :

- the relation between the processes of language learning and language
teaching (and the lack of isomorphy between the two) ;
- the relationship between various forms of language teaching, implicit
and explicit language learning processes, and implicit and explicit forms
of language knowledge.
- the specific nature of institutional (as opposed to naturalistic)
language learning contexts and its impact on the language learning process
(including issues such as the role of corrective feedback and other forms
of negative evidence on language learning);
- contributions of the study of instructed language learning towards
general theories of language acquisition and bilingualism ;

The programme has been designed to allow for maximum discussion among the
participants and includes :
- 2 invited plenary lectures by Jan Hulstijn (University of Amsterdam) and
Michel Paradis (McGill University, Montreal)
- Over 40 selected paper presentations representing a wide range of
perspectives on the central issues of the colloquium
- Round table discussion led by four discussants : Patsy Lightbown
(Concordia University, Montreal), Daniel Véronique (Université de Paris
III, Sorbonne), Inge Bartning (Stockholm University), Gabriele Pallotti
(University of Bologna).

A selection of the contributions to this colloquium will be published at a
later date.
