Managing Online Educational Resources and Media
6 March - 14 April 2000
Who will benefit/the audience:
The course is aimed at people who are tasked with managing or creating
websites for educational purposes (course websites, resource sites or
information sites for teachers and learners). There are many tools that
allow authors to generate web pages for course content and resources,
however finding, maintaining, updating and reusing an ever-increasing volume
of materials can prove difficult. This course is for people who want to look
at the issues and examine some solutions.
Course aims:
The course starts by exploring the potential of the Web for disseminating,
sharing and managing educational resources and also some of the apparent
obstacles. We will look at tools and methods that help organise material
(e.g. using XML), and examine the role of metadata and how it can provide a
way into the effective management of website content.
At the end of the course participants will:
- be aware of the various ways in which Web resources can be
organised, indexed and searched;
- understand the importance and use of metadata;
- be aware of the issues in generating, maintaining and
sharing content;
- be able to identify an appropriate information management
strategy for their own needs;
- have gained some experience of working with content
management tools and technologies.
Course activities fall into three areas:
- readings that aim to introduce current thinking and provide
a common basis for discussion;
- practical tasks that allow participants to experience,
investigate and experiment with different ideas and solutions;
- discussions that encourage participants to share and reflect
on their own experiences and learn from those of other participants and
invited experts from other institutions.
