Progressive Engineer is an online magazine covering engineering activities
in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. Three feature stories on the website
involve bridge technology and might be of interest: 1) Because precast
concrete bridges can be erected in as little as a day, they see extensive
use and play a major role in the overhauling America's deteriorating roadway
infrastructure (January/February 2000 issue). 2) The Construction
Automation & Robotics Laboratory at North Carolina State University (CARL)
has undertaken a host of projects that integrate computers in construction,
including a robotic system for inspecting and painting bridges
(November/December 1999 issue). 3) Bridges in West Virginia and Virginia
are having their decks replaced with fiber-reinforced composite materials,
which offer a lightweight, corrosion-resistant alternative to steel
(January/February 1999 issue). These stories can be seen at
www.progressiveengineer.com -- the precast bridge feature is in the current
issue, while the other two can be found under Back Issues.
