Subject: RSA RDI Summer School
I wonder if you might be able to help me with a new initiative that the RSA
are running this year. The Faculty of Royal Designers for Industry are
putting together a Summer School which will bring together some of their
number with young(ish) designers in the first ten years of their careers,
and a number of people from other professions and occupations to create a
rewarding creative and intellectual mix to work on a number of projects.
We would like to include a doctor or medical researcher amongst the group.
Could you perhaps suggest someone, or circulate this email to potentially
interested parties? The project is fully funded and transport,
accommodation, food and most drink will free.
I would be most grateful for any help you can offer with this.
With thanks and best wishes
Ruth Adams
Further Information...
The Faculty of Royal Designers for Industry (RDIs) was established by the
RSA in 1938. RDI is regarded as the highest honour to be obtained in the UK
in the field of industrial design. Only one hundred designers can hold the
distinction RDI at any one time, and such is the standard that this
complement has never been filled. RDIs come from every walk of industrial
design life, and are committed to encouraging design in all its forms.
The RDI Summer School will be a four-day residential school offering a
unique opportunity for young designers in the early stages of their careers
to meet and work with leaders in their field. This is a brand new concept;
suggested and developed by Chris Wise, RDI and supported by Timothy O'Brien,
Master of the Faculty. It is a response to Christopher Frayling's challenge
to offer leadership for the design profession.
The Summer School will link practitioners at different levels within
industry and will therefore compliment the bridge between design schools and
industry provided by the RSA's Student Design Awards. This interaction
between established and future design talent should inspire innovative,
original and practical outcomes in the working lives of all involved,
resulting in long-term design development in industry, commerce and culture.
The School will be organised into cross-disciplinary workshops; combining,
for example, fashion, theatre, industrial, furniture or graphic design. The
model of the designer as a creative individual, working in a discrete
sphere, is anachronistic in today's networked, multi-media culture, so the
Summer School will encourage team-work to promote a more collaborative
outlook. Designers at all stages of their careers will benefit from contact
with their peers and the opportunity to forge cross-disciplinary links and
creativities. Established designers can learn fresh new ideas and skills in
areas, such as IT and multimedia, with which they may be less familiar. Any
practising designer within the first ten years of their career is invited to
apply for the RDI Summer School. The School will be free to participants,
who will be selected on merit by a panel of RDIs.
