Can anyone advise me on a sensible, practical, cost-effective approach for
dealing with employees who USED to be exposed to asbestos...prior to 1978?
ie..Is there any need to undertake routine annual chest x-rays where there
is no clinical reason to do so.....is it SAFE to do such x-rays so
regularly? And since we all know that asbestosis can take years to develop,
what, if anything, can an employer do for such employees who have seen
colleagues die of the disease over the years?
The Royal Society of Radiologists' guidelines on clinical radiography state
that x-rays should only be done where there is a clinical reason to do
so..and warn of the danger of over-exposing people. Many people, including
unions at my place of work feel that the caring employer should do such
x-rays on an annual basis in order that workers who develop early signs of
the disease can make claims or where clear can be reassured........
