Subject: Re : Women in mining.
Read the Archives of the Barnsley Chronicle, which states. For nearly 150
years thousands of Barnsley men-and in the early days, women-worked
underground in mines that stretched from Silkstone to the Dearne and
Worsbrough to Grimethorpe. Also women worked down the mines in The second
World War as part of the shortage in manpower ( as they did in munitions
factories and steel works and the land Army.) They did not work work on the
coalface, but were employed in pony driving and other tasks. Yes women did
work down the mines and without them we could had lost the war. These were
very brave ladies who had to leave there young at home for someone to look
after.
