Peter, and others
Some quick thoughts on this extremely useful service.
Firstly, this is really one of the best things about the internet - lots of
bits of information gathered together becomes something much more useful
than the parts - and is also there for those who have never realised that
the information existed.
Secondly, it may be useful to differentiate between material freely
accessible to the public and that which is held in closed or private
collections, such as university libraries, etc. Also, that which is
available on demand and that which has to be ordered in advance.
For example, the Mining Journal has a complete set of MJ and indeed Mining
Magazine and much else, but this is not generally available for consultation
as far as I know. There's also the Institution libraries (all one now, but
was IMinE and IMM). I'm not sure whether these are open collections or not
but they have the full set of their own publications and indeed the
constituent organisations.
I know it makes your job more complicated, but it may save effort later to
collect this information now.
Think of all those wasted journeys!
Incidentally, these may still happen. This week, I had some Annual Reports
ordered through the Guildhall Library (Aruba Gold Mining Co Ltd, 1890 -
1895), only to find that a five year run of bound volumes contained two
short letters stating that the company concerned did not have the reports
available. The address was in Sheffield, but this may be something to do
with Aruba etc being a John Taylor company (I think).
The Guildhall Library is well worth a mention in your list, as far as I know
the ONLY major source of old Annual Reports of the UK listed companies
(though not completely comprehensive - maybe about 5% were never received or
filed, particularly small companies) . Two days (at least) notice and use
the List of Extinct Companies published by the Stock Exchange (I think) to
check on the exact name. This is fairly widely available in reference
libraries.
