Mineral Statistics/ List of Mines
I would certainly like to see a set of these produced in
digital format. As has been said previously and again
in this most recent discussion, they are difficult to locate.
The only complete set I have personally seen is at the British Library.
Due to their connection with the collection of the information
in earlier times the Geological Survey may well have a set
somewhere.
They can be found in the BL online catalogue OK - go for
the pre 1975 reference collection option, and enter
Author's name - hunt robert
and title mineral statistics
and you will get the entry for 1853-1881 incl.
For the next batch enter author's name as home office
and same title
I did not try later ones, but I expect entering author as
board of trade and title perhaps as list of mines will
produce the entries.
There was a discussion on this list in September 1998,
which produced the following from Peter Claughton and
Christopher Williams:
Flintshire Record Office, in Grosvenor (Halkyn) mss.
set 1853 to 1919.
Manchester Central Library - 1848-50. 1853-56, 1858 (clays only),
1863, 1872, 1874-81, plus later ones dates not specified
National Libray for Wales - dates not specified
Presumably the other Copyright Libraries are also likely to have
sets. (ie Cambridge, Oxford, Edinburgh)
I can add to this:
Inst. of Mining & Mechanical Engineers, Newcastle upon Tyne
Set 1853-1930, except 1859-62, 1894-96,98,99 and 1920-26.
(The missing ones are probably there somewhere, but not to
be found at present; the library here must be one of the best
of its type in the country, but it is poorly catalogued)
Does anyone know what other places have - e.g. Wigan?
