Dear Martin,
Point taken, but a pair of clogs was an expensive item in those days.
Granted, there was little to no theft amongst the mining communities, but to
leave a pair of clogs behind when the mine closed, or just to abandon them
was not done - they cost too much - & they would be retrieved. It must not be
forgotten that there were different 'superstitions' in different areas. As
the originator of this subject stated, single clogs have been found in
similar circumstances......... there must have been someone legged miners out
there! Sorry, not trying to make fun at your expense. I have heard of candles
being left for good luck, as also a bit of bate. I have personally only come
across clogs in a mine a few times, and in those cases they had been thrown
away due to their being worn out. But to find a complete pair, placed
carefully, is another thing. Even if the mine closed, the owner could
retrieve same.
As said before whistling - & I think this discussion was on the base not so
long ago - is, I have to admit, a metal mining matter - however, it is one
that I take seriously. It is up to others what they do, but they will not do
it in my company.
Kind Regards, Bernard
