There is nothing surprising about the old town gas gasworks being near to
railway sidings. Surely at that time most gasworks had their own railway
line(s) linking them to the rail network. I remember as a young lad at
Weston-super-Mare, the gasworks had their own line from the main station and
sidings at Locking road over to the works. The traffic on the road was
frequently stopped as a train of coal was shunted across the road through
the middle of a (traffic) roundabout. There is still a roundabout there
now - I expect some of the track is still there, but there is a car showroom
built over where the line went and the gasworks site is cleared (but not yet
built on - its probably 'polluted land'). And, yes, I used to do some
trainspotting!
