Hi - In the book 'In and Under Britain' by M. H. Haddock, page 183 there is
a photograph of a disc coal-cutter. The make is not stated. The caption
says "The wheel studded with steel picks revolves under the coal seam for a
depth of 3 to 6 feet, according to the size of the machine."
The description on page 181 says "There are three types of coal-cutting
machines of the travelling class, t.e. types which move along the coal face;
these are the disc, the bar, and the chain type.
Disc machines drive a wheel with teeth picks in it. They were the first
type, and are now not much favoured in mining."
