The village of Orlingbury is some four miles north west
of Wellingborough in Northamptonshire - I used to live
a short distance away. This is very much iron ore mining
country, although as far as I know there were no mines
at Orlingbury itself. However, there were several within
a short distance, in the Wellingborough and Finedon
areas. It is not likely that anyone living in Orlingbury
would be employed at Corby. If you are interested in
the story of ironstone mining in the area there is a
considerable amount of detail in "The Ironstone
Quarries of the Midlands - Part 4 The Wellingborough
Area" by E.S. Tonks (Runpast Publishing, 1990)
ISBN 1 870754 04 2. You should be able to get it
through a library.
Ironstone was often discovered during the building
of railway lines in the area.
