The Octagon Mill - There are two flues running from the mill. They are both at
least 7 feet wide and about six feet high The question is why where flues made
so big.?
Reasons might be:
Large diameter means low linear flow velocity and therefore more residence
time for settling flue dust - applies to large particles only.
Easier to clean and longer time permissible between cleaning.
Less draught loss than with a narrow flue.
As the Octagon Mill was built at a time (early C19th) when long flues were
starting to appear in Yorkshire and the really long ones (ca 1000 metres) had
not been built. There was very little around to copy and design parameters had
not been empirically established. Large flues would operate successfully with
little risk - a non-functioning design would have been a disaster.
