"The Railway Observer", in which the excellent article by T. Rounthwaite about
the West Durham Railway, was a journal. Perhaps you could obtain copies through
a library service. (You will need all the 1959 editions - i.e. Volume 59 - as
the article was serialized.)
Whellans 1894 is The Durham Directory by Francis Whellan & Co., properly known
as "History, Topography, and Directory of the County Palatine of Durham,
comprising a general survey of the county and a history of the city and diocese
of Durham" (!) The 1894 edition was the second. I think this should be
available through a library service as it is a classic.
(Both can be viewed in the reference section of Durham City Library.)
