Carbide lighting not mentioned in Lupton *Mining* 1906, or Hughes *Textbook of coal mining* 1904 or article Safety lamp in Britannica 11 ed 1911 However Ashworth writing in Boulton *Practical Coal Mining*, vol V, c 1910 says:
'Acetylene gas from carbide of calcium has been applied to safety lamps both in Canada and Germany, and gives a splendid light, but it is too cumbersome, and is not in use underground at the present time.'
