Dear All,
There is a very clear & defined breed here, but I shall speak generally since
it is impossible to do otherwise. I know horses very well & have worked with
same. Packhorses were used in very numerous parts of this country & for a
very varied number of purposes. Likewise, there is different terminology for
same in different parts also - whether for mining, timber, or general haulage
- general haulage being one of the main purposes in mining areas throughout
the World - as also for other purposes at one time because there was nothing
else to move things. For example: the Lakeland pony/horse is a very strong
beast, brought up for the purpose of burden one way or another - originally
for hard work in farming, but as in all cases the purpose changed to suit the
immediate & general needs. The same applies to Yorkshire where there is
different terminology, but the history of this and all breeds survives as it
does everywhere. There is a very distinctive breed of workhorse that survives
in all of these places. In Wales, packhorses were used extensively, as they
were in many parts of this country & the World as a whole of course: again,
in Wales it was the Welsh Mountain Pony that was used because of it's basic
strength & stamina for burden. Scotland also has it's breeds to suit the
terrain. Taking all in all, and the history of same, there is not one single
part of this country that does not have an equine breed that was not brought
up for burden, and again, there is not one part of the World that does not
have it's own breed: therefore the answer to this query is very broad, and
could be very protracted! I am happy to continue this matter with the
original enquirer, but it will be off line and to me personally. If, however,
others are interested, let me know, and we shall make it a general matter.
Regards, Bernard
