Subject: July Woman as Leaders: About Female Healers in Medieval Times

"Women as Leaders" is a collection of inspirational quotes by and about
women published monthly by VHPublishing's woman2woman newsletter -
http://www.vhpublishing.com/woman2woman . Here is our quote for July 2000:

Marie Colinet
A traveling doctor and midwife, Marie Colinet of Berne worked a huge
circuit, treating patients throughout Germany. To get medical gigs in 1580,
you had to be a "tackle anything" sawbones - a challenge that applied doubly
to women. In the course of her rounds, probably moving from place to place
in a horse-drawn wagon, Marie did everything from minor surgery to
C-sections. The professional highlight of her career came when she
encountered a patient whose sight was threatened by a nasty sliver of metal.
Using a magnet, Dr. Colinet deftly removed the metal from her patient's
eye - the first time such a technique was utilized. Luckily, a witness was
on hand during the operation - her husband and fellow surgeon, Fabricius von
Hilden, who wrote up a glowing account of Marie's sleight of hand. You'd
think his eyewitness documentation would nail this "female first" down. But
you'd be wrong. Before many years passed, Marie's successful innovation was
routinely being credited to Dr. Fabricius - even though his part in the
proceedings was his play-by-play description of watching his wife do it all.
