To all members of the 'UKMidwifery List', 'Professional Midwife List' and
'Midwifery Research List'
Recent mailings on the 'ukmidwifery' list have prompted a suggestion to
advertise more widely the informal ARM quarterly National Meetings. They
offer an invaluable opportunity to exchange views, take part in debates on
local and national maternity care issues, attend practical workshops and
enjoy good food with stimulating company.
The meetings are held in various venues around the country, hosted by a
local ARM group, usually in an informal setting, (village hall, community
centre, scout hut, etc.). Although the meetings are primarily designed as a
regular opportunity for ARM members to meet with each other, we also welcome
non-members, (midwives, students, interested lay people, etc.).
A regular item on the agenda is a 'Caring & Sharing' session, held during
the workshop programme in the afternoon, usually in a quiet room or part of
the garden, without the need to sign up for Workshop, thus offering a
confidential opportunity to talk about events, concerns, etc. in a safe,
sympathetic environment, (box of tissues provided!). These sessions are
usually facilitated by Olga Parker, who is a retired community midwife,
long-standing ARM member. If she is not able to attend we have other
members who are happy to hold the Caring & Sharing Session.
The National Meeting usually takes up the whole day from around 9.0 am to
5.0 pm. Lunch and refreshments are provided (often home-made - delicious!).
Registration fee is £12 for ARM members, £20 for non-members, £6 for
students/unwaged.
The meetings are held in March, June, September and December. The Annual
General Meeting is usually held during the morning of the September meeting.
Overnight accommodation is usually available in local ARM members' homes for
those who need to travel the day before the meeting.
Details of dates and venues can be found on the ARM website
(www.midwifery.org.uk).
The next meeting will be held in Nottingham on Saturday 16th September. For
further details and travel directions please see the Notice in the Autumn
issue of MIDWIFERY MATTERS, or contact ARM [log in to unmask]
There are around 50 Local Contacts around the country - members who have
offered to give advice, information, support, etc. in their local areas -
mostly to women having difficulty with local maternity services, but also to
colleagues and students who need to talk through certain issues. Many of
these Local Contacts are also actively involved in a local ARM group,
meeting regularly in members' homes. For your nearest Local Contact write
to the ARM email address or telephone 01695 572776.
A frequent comment at the end of an ARM Meeting is 'I feel rejuvenated and
inspired - I could tackle anything now!'
We look forward to welcoming you all!
